IMMUNIZATIONS – SPECIFIC VACCINES
Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis
among children worldwide. The virus typically causes severe vomiting,
watery diarrhea & abdominal pain. In infants it can quickly lead to
dehydration. Rotavirus causes over half a million deaths worldwide in
children under 5 years old.
Rotateq is an oral vaccine. Most common side effects
include irritability after the vaccine with possible mild diarrhea or
vomiting. Some studies have shown a small increase in the cases of
intussusception a week after the first dose of the vaccine.
Intussusception is a blockage in the bowel requiring medical attention.
The estimated risk of intussusception is 1 case per 100,000 infants.
