Respiratory Syncytial Virus/Bronchiolitis - by Christina Connelly, RN, MSN, CPNP  Printable Version
Respiratory Syncytial Virus or "RSV" is a common respiratory virus that spreads seasonally starting in late fall through early spring, peaking in the months of December and January. The virus causes only mild cold symptoms in adults and healthy, older children. In infants younger than age 1 and in those children with special health care needs, RSV can lead to "bronchiolitis". Bronchiolitis causes lower respiratory tract symptoms such as cough, wheezing, rapid or labored breathing, and cyanosis (blue color to skin).

Although we remain "on-staff" there, starting January 1, 2012 our doctors no longer will be routinely rounding on well newborns at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) nursery.  If you use (or are planning to use) our practice for primary care and deliver a baby at BIDMC, your baby will be cared for in the nursery by the BIDMC "hospitalist" neonatology group(a.k.a. "CNS" or the Cochran Newborn Service).  We know and communicate well with the members of CNS, and you can be sure they will keep us "in the loop" on any significant issues that may arise while your baby is in the nursery.  They will be receiving the same excellent care we would provide, with one important extra: there will be a responsible pediatrician or neonatologist actually in the building available to respond promptly if need be"24/7".

The most common causes of chronic nasal congestion are viral illnesses and allergies. As we all know, viruses frequently cause fever, runny nose, headache, sore throat, and congestion. Generally the symptoms are worst during the first week or two, however, the cough associated with viruses can often last 14-20 days before the post-nasal drip and congestion finally subside.
