RESPIRATORY ALLERGY

Does your child have constant or repeated nasal congestion, itching, watery discharge and a tendency toward infections of the nose, throat, ears, eyes or palate?  These common signs of respiratory allergy affect more than a third of all children! An "allergy" occurs when the immune system "reacts" or decides to fight against something found normally in the environment.  In a way allergy is the opposite of an immune deficiency - instead of being passive in the face of invading germs, the allergic person’s immune system has a "chip on its shoulder" and "picks fights" with substances it ought to ignore. It has "an attitude" towards ordinary stuff in the environment.  If an allergic person also has asthma (see our separate handout, Information About Asthma), respiratory allergies are likely to play a major role in triggering that also, although allergies and asthma are two separate diseases.
