James Verdery, LMHC

I am a licensed mental health counselor specializing in individual and family therapy.  I work primarily with children and adolescents ranging from ages 5 to 18 although I have worked with adults of all ages.  I believe a key component to successful therapy is having a genuine, strong therapeutic relationship and I work to establish that with all of my clients.

I have experience in treating anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, oppositional and defiant behaviors, as well as trauma and loss.  I tend to incorporate play when working with younger children as it allows them to process conflicts and experiences in their lives the way an adult might talk through a problem.  Through play, a child can process trauma, understand family dynamics, and learn about themselves in the safe, semi-removed space of their imagination.

My schooling background is in the vein of psychodynamic counseling theory, but I tend to take an eclectic approach, pulling in aspects of CBT, play therapy, and strength based therapy.

I earned a BA in psychology from Saint Michael’s College in 2011, after which I spent time working at a residential program for children ages 7-15 in Burlington Vermont.  In 2015 I completed a masters degree in clinical psychology, also from Saint Michael’s College and relocated to the Boston area. I worked doing in home therapy with children and families for four and a half years.  In that time I also worked in inpatient and outpatient settings as well as in school based programs.
